Join book launch and discussion of Dr Srinivas Panthukala’s ‘Traditional folk media in India’ at 3 pm at conference hall, EFL University, Hyderabad.

In the last one hundred years, there has been an increasing interest and development in Traditional Folk Media like folk arts, folk drama, folk music, theatre, and traditional fairs and festivals in India. This growing interest is largely based on the conviction that the social change arises out of art, aesthetics creativity and indigenous solutions. The Development Studies of 1960s brought about a paradigm shift in understanding the concept of development and social change in society. In this book, the author reflects on those structures of development, and change, which help us in the geometrical progression of society.

The book analyzed the role of Jathara as a local and traditional mode of communication for rural development.

The contents of this book deals with an overview of traditional folk media, characteristic elements of the study, empirical data of jathara, importance of jathara as a medium of communication for the development of society. The book analyzed the role of Jathara as a local and traditional mode of communication for rural development.

In addition, it has portrayed the historical perspective of Raj Gonds’ Nagobha jathara as a conduit of communication and development, Paatha Pantala Jathara of Sangham women, Deccan Development Society, Zaheerabad, Telangana.

About the author

Srinivas Panthukala is an Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Journalismin the Department of Communication, EFL University, Hyderabad. He is an expert in the area of Development Communication – TV Journalism and Political Economy of Mass Media. He was awarded an M.Phil degree on “Jathara asa mode of Communicationfor Development” by the Department of Communication and Journalism, Osmania University, Hyderabad in 2009. The Departmentof Film Studies and Visual Communication, EFL University, Hyderabad awarded him with a PhD degree in 2014. His doctoral thesis was entitled, “Political Economy of Media: the Rise of 24 Hours Television News Channels of A.P”.
